Welcome to Alkaline Water Machine Source, your #1 online water filter sleuth. My trained eye noticed a gap in the alkaline water filter bottle department, and I decided to write this guide to fill it. I’m excited to share some helpful information with you that’s easy to understand and explains why you should avoid alkaline water products such as the pH Revive filter bottle.

alkaline water filter bottle buyer's guide 2019

In this guide, I share my picks for the best alkaline water filter bottle and explain why they’re the best. By the end, you’ll know exactly what to look for when choosing your alkaline water filter bottle and other water filter products in the future.

I’ve been studying alkaline water for over a year now, and I know there are a lot of misconceptions about it. Misconceptions often lead to greed and faulty products designed to profit off those misconceptions.

Together, we can squash the misconceptions and share accurate alkaline water information with our friends and family.

Let’s start with my pH Revive Review.

pH Revive Review

Why should you avoid the pH Revive alkaline water filter bottle? The answer is simple: the “filter” isn’t actually a filter.

These types of alkaline water filters rely on mineral balls – that are often too large – to filter water contaminants. It doesn’t take a scientific genius to see that these large mineral balls won’t get the job done on their own.

This is a closeup of the pH Revive filter:

The pH Revive “filter” relies on these balls alone to filter your water.

Here’s the problem with this filter…

These mineral balls are useful, but only after your water has been filtered through other filter media, most commonly activated carbon.

The alkaline minerals in the pH Revive filter do raise the pH of your water. However, they don’t do an adequate job of removing water contaminants.

To remove water contaminants, you need additional filter media to remove them before adding the alkaline minerals to boost the pH.

Here’s an example of what I mean:

Notice how the “Feed Water” passes through two types of filter media before it reaches the “Alkaline Beads.”

When you purchase the pH Revive alkaline water filter bottle, all you get is the beads (plus a bit of KDF) minus the granular activated carbon.

The pH Revive filter does include KDF. The problem is the KDF gets mixed together with the alkaline mineral balls. This reduces the KDF’s ability to filter the water on its own.

That’s why the best water filters work in separate stages with finer media to increase the surface area of the filtration media. This process is the best way to get the most out of the filter media.

On top of that, pH Revive recommends replacing the filters once a month, and there’s also conflicting information regarding the presence of KDF in the filter.

Lastly, I couldn’t find a water quality report for the pH Revive filter to verify what contaminants it removes and doesn’t remove.

The Bloated Health Claims

Be careful when you’re shopping for alkaline water products and see the words “HEXAGONAL” and “STRUCTURED” water. This is pseudoscience.

The pH Revive product page lists a number of bloated health benefit claims. The company also claims that its water is “ionized.”

Water ionizers and alkaline water machines make alkaline ionized water, and they require electricity.

Mineral balls in a stick don’t make true ionized water.

Plus, water ionizers don’t add minerals to your feed water. They use the minerals that are already in your tap water to make alkaline ionized water.

This is one of the greatest advantages of owning an ionizer since filters like the pH Revive can overload your water with minerals. The filter in the pH Revive may add unnecessary minerals since most tap water has more than enough minerals already.

The Key Takeaway

When shopping for an alkaline water filter bottle, try to avoid the “filters” that rely on mineral balls alone to filter your water.

Instead, look for alkaline water filter bottles that use a two-stage system with activated carbon or other types of reliable filter media.

Now, let’s check out the best alkaline water filter bottles currently available.

Seychelle pH2O Alkaline Water Filter Bottle Review

In comes Seychelle, one of the most transparent alkaline water brands out there. With just a few clicks, I accessed the water quality report for Seychelle’s alkaline water filter bottle. Granted it’s from 2010, but at least they have one.

Right when I looked at the design of the Seychelle bottle, I knew it was better than the pH Revive.

The filter of the pH revive doesn’t attach to the straw:

The straw of the pH2O bottle attaches directly to the filter:

This feature is important because it guarantees that the water goes through the filter before you drink it.

Here are some of the water contaminants the Seychelle filter removes:

  • 90% fluoride removal
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • VOCs
  • Chlorine (99.99%)
  • Chromium 6
  • Overall, the filter removes up to 99.99% of most water contaminants and pollutants

It removes the contaminants before adding the alkaline minerals to boost the pH of your drinking water from 7.0 up to 9.5.

Do you see the difference between the Seychelle filter and pH Revive now?

What’s in the Seychelle filter?

The filter contains coconut activated carbon and Seychelle’s own ionic adsorption micro-filtration technology.

The filter has a 2-micron pore size.

What’s the filter life?

One of the greatest advantages of the Seychelle alkaline water filter bottle is the long filter life.

Each USA-made filter has a life of up to 100 gallons.

Is the bottle BPA-free?

Yes, it is.

Does the filter remove fluoride?

Yes, up to 90%

TYgo portable water ionizer Review – Best Alkaline Water Filter Bottle 2019

One of my favorite water ionizer brands, Tyent, also makes a high-quality alkaline water filter bottle. The TYgo bottle – like the Seychelle – removes water contaminants and boosts the pH of your drinking water by adding alkaline minerals.

The TYgo is easy to use. You start by unscrewing the lid, flipping it over, and then filling the inverted lid with tap water to fill the TYgo reservoir (see photo below):

After you fill the inverted lid, allow the water to drip down through the filter and fill the reservoir with purified alkaline water (see photo below):

Once the water finishes filtering, unscrew the cap, flip it over, and screw it back on to bring the bottle with you anywhere. Do you see how cool this is? You can make alkaline water wherever you go and even bring it with you on vacation. It’s like having a portable alkaline water filter pitcher.

Final Thoughts

The TYgo and Seychelle pH2O are the two best alkaline water filter bottles currently on the market in 2019. It’s best to stick with one of these if you want a reliable alkaline water filter bottle.

Most of the other bottles I checked out have the same filter type as the pH Revive. To learn more about why these filters don’t work well, read my list of alkaline water brands to avoid.

Choosing the Best Alkaline Water Filter

Always remember to look for an alkaline water filter that actually filters your water. “Mineral balls” are only there to add alkaline minerals and boost pH. They don’t do a great job of filtering. Activated carbon is the most common filter media to remove water contaminants.

Overall, the Seychelle filter does the best job of removing impurities.

Personally, I like the design of the TYgo bottle more than the Seychelle. It all comes down to your preference when you choose which one is best for you.

I feel I did my job to help you avoid wasting money on inferior alkaline water products. Now you can tell your friends and family what to look for when they buy their filters too.

Plus, now you’re a certified alkaline water filter sleuth. Isn’t learning fun!

Cheers and best of luck on your alkaline water journey.
