I think the greatest benefit you’ll get from this article is a clear choice. By the end, you’ll know for sure if alkaline water is right for you. You’ll also learn enough about alkaline water to identify the alkaline water brands to avoid and the ones that are legit.

Are you ready to get started? I always like to hear the bad news first. Hopefully, you’re the same because I’m going to start with the cons.

The Cons

#1) Price

Let’s talk price first. One of the greatest cons of drinking bottled alkaline water is the high price tag. You can easily run up a massive drinking water bill each month if you buy each bottle separately.

Even cases are super expensive for some brands.

Aside from bottled water, a quality water ionizer is an expensive upfront investment. You have to be locked in and ready to throw down the money for an ionizer.

In the long run, you’ll save money, but that initial mountain is often too steep to climb or not fitting your budget at the moment.

My best advice is to find an affordable subscribe and save option for bottled water or do your research to find a quality ionizer that doesn’t cost more than your first car.

Alkaline water filter pitchers can cost more than traditional water filter pitchers. It’s also difficult to find a quality alkaline pitcher.

Like they say, “Health is wealth.”

#2) The Time It Takes to Understand Alkaline Water

It takes a lot of time to understand alkaline water benefits and alkaline water in general. Trust me, I’ve been studying it for the past year, and there’s still more to learn.

Each time I peel back a layer of the onion, I find new information to absorb.

Since most people barely have spare time, it’s hard to find time to research alkaline water. In the end, most people don’t understand what they’re buying.

It’s easy for one person to tell you that alkaline water is a miracle healer and another person to tell you it’s completely bogus. Then, you’re left wondering, who’s right?

The greatest misconception I’ve seen is the thought that the higher the pH the more health benefits. This is 100% untrue.

There’s an ideal pH range for alkaline drinking water, and you should stay inside it since there’s no research proving that water with a higher pH than this range will give you more health benefits.

Also, a water ionizer is a complex machine. It’s easier to use one than to sit down and learn exactly what’s going on inside it.

#3) Opportunists

Whenever there’s a new health product on the scene, opportunists come flying out of the woodwork. For this reason, opportunists are the most extreme negative in my list of pros and cons of alkaline water.

Unfortunately, these opportunists have given alkaline water a bad rap and the skeptics enough fuel to convince the masses that alkaline water is bad.

I’m sure you’re here right now because of all the conflicting information you’ve seen about alkaline water.

Let me let you in on a little something. The EPA recommends a pH range for drinking water of 6.5 – 8.5.

If alkaline water was bad for you, do you think the EPA’s scale would lean toward the alkaline side of the pH chart? Furthermore, pH is only an EPA guideline, which means it’s non-enforceable.

In other words, alkaline water without an extreme pH value is safe to drink.

Getting back to the point of this section, the opportunists stretch the truth and sensationalize the health benefits of alkaline water. You have to remember, it’s just water.

A lot of the health benefits you experience from drinking alkaline water come from better hydration.

Bottom line: Be careful when you’re shopping for alkaline water and you come across far-fetched health claims. There’s a ton of opportunists out there doing their best to profit off alkaline water’s introduction to the Western world.

Alkaline water is nothing new. Asians have been drinking it for decades. I first discovered it years ago inside a random 7-Eleven in Manila. It’s sold throughout Asia in every convenience store.

No one there is going crazy over it, and it’s cheap compared to what companies charge in the US.

#4) Alkaline Water Is Another Name for Ionized Water

Did you know the alkaline pH of water is only part of the reason it’s healthy? That’s right, water that’s undergone electrolysis in a water ionizer is full of antioxidants and molecular hydrogen.

Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware of this because all they hear are the words “alkaline water.”

This goes back to the time it takes to understand what alkaline water truly is and how it can benefit your health.

Here’s what happens. The skeptics argue that water with too high of a pH is bad for you and has no health benefits. They’re correct, but they fail to mention ionized water. You don’t need to drink ionized water with too high of a pH to reap the rewards.

I think that about wraps up the cons. I just sat here and tried to think of more. Let’s move on to the pros.

The Pros

#1) Amazingly Pure Water

What the skeptics don’t know is how powerful the filters are in quality water ionizers.

Another science-backed alkaline water benefit is lower blood pressure. Why? Well, magnesium in alkaline ionized water is easier for our bodies to absorb, which works wonders for correcting or preventing a magnesium deficiency.

A magnesium deficiency can easily lead to hypertension.

It also goes back to better hydration since better hydration is one of the simplest ways to keep blood pressure in check.

#6) Weight Loss

Weight loss is a common benefit that people who drink alkaline ionized water experience. One of the easiest ways to lose unwanted weight is to drink more water and less sugary beverages.

This is one of the only ways on Earth to lose weight on autopilot. Don’t expect to reach your weight loss goal without doing some of the grunt work, but expect to look and feel better.

In my case, alkaline water has also improved my digestion.

Tip: A great way to kick-start your metabolism is to drink alkaline ionized water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

I follow that tip every day and have completely eliminated a sour stomach feeling I used to get some mornings. I’m also in the best shape of my life.

#7) More Energy

More energy is yet another common benefit I’ve experienced and read in numerous alkaline water testimonials. Fortunately, this pro of drinking alkaline water doesn’t take a genius to understand.

Since I’ve only been talking about health benefits, let’s talk about taste.

The good news is people love the taste of alkaline ionized water too. In fact, most of the positive reviews I’ve read during my research and product reviews note the amazing taste of ionized water.

This also goes back to weight loss. A lot of people who didn’t drink enough water before often become converts because they love the taste of the water so much.

Just imagine all the health benefits you can experience by simply trading out your sodas for alkaline water.

You don’t have to focus on drinking just one type of alkaline water. You may like artesian alkaline water or ionized water.

I like both, and I prefer ionized water. The water I drink every day has a pH between 8 and 9.5, and it treats me quite well.
